Preparing for your Appointment
To help you prepare for your scheduled appointment with the ECMM Health Professional, please review the following:
For all appointments – Government-issued picture I.D. is required
Health Assessment / Medical - takes approximately 30-40 minutes
- Bring your prescription glasses, including over-the-counter or pharmacy-issued reading glasses if applicable
- Bring a list of your current medications, including the dosage and frequency
- Know the names and telephone numbers of your health care providers
- Avoid caffeinated beverages for at least 2 hours prior to your appointment (e.g., coffee, tea, pop and energy drinks)
- Do not smoke for at least 2 hours prior to your appointment
- Please note: Urine sample may be required. (Do not void immediately prior to appointment)
- Please take your medications as prescribed on the day of your appointment
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
Spirometry (Pulmonary Function Test / PFT) – takes approximately 15 minutes
- Bring list of your current medications, including the dosage and frequency. Take medication as prescribed.
- Avoid caffeinated beverages for at least 2 hours prior to your appointment. (e.g., coffee, tea, pop and energy drinks)
- Do not smoke for at least 2 hours prior to your appointment
- Do not use an inhaler 2 hours prior to your appointment, unless medically required
- Do not eat a heavy meal within 1 hour of your appointment
Audiogram (Hearing Test) – takes approximately 15 minutes
- Avoid loud noise for at least 14 hours prior to your hearing test
- If you must be exposed to loud noise, hearing protection should be worn
Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) – takes approximately 15 minutes
- Avoid caffeinated beverages for at least 2 hours prior to your appointment. These include coffee, tea, Coke / Pepsi and energy drinks
- Do not smoke for at least 2 hours prior to your appointment
- Electrodes will be applied to your exposed chest
- All metal items, including jewelry, phones, belt, money, underwire bra if applicable etc. must be removed
Blood Collection (Venipuncture) – takes approximately 15 minutes
- Instructions will be provided for individual testing. For fasting specimens, do not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours. If fasting is not required, drink plenty of water before your appointment
Chest X-rays – will be completed at the x-ray department at a hospital/outpatient clinic
- Bring your provincial health card (required to complete the x-ray requisition)
- For NS and NL, except Lab City, the x-ray requisition will be given to you to take to the hospital to have your chest x-ray to be completed.
- For Lab City, the completed x-ray requisition along with your contact number will be sent to the hospital. You or your company representative should call the x-ray department in 1-2 days to book your chest x-ray
- In NB, you will be required to make an appointment with your own physician to have the x-ray requisition completed. You will be provided with a letter detailing the x-ray requirements and a “Release of Information” form for your doctor.
- For Miner’s Chest x-rays – additional information will be provided at your appointment for your Miner’s Medical.
