DOT Testing Panel Changes

IMPORTANT MEMO – Changes to US DOT Drug Testing Requirements

The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) has made changes to their drug testing requirements taking effect January 1st, 2018. The primary changes pertain to the substances tested for in their standard 5 panel, most notably, it will now include four semi-synthetic opioids (i.e. hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone and oxymorphone).

What does this mean for DOT clients?

ECMM will automatically transition the testing requirements for our clients that must adhere to the US DOT requirements to the new panel as of January 1, 2018. These clients may notice a slight change in the format of the drug result letter.

ECMM will also issue an addendum to be added to a US DOT Compliant Drug and Alcohol Policy, detailing the changes applied to their testing requirements.

*If you are a client that has both DOT and NDOT random testing pools, the NDOT testing requirements will be automatically changed to the new testing requirements.

What does this mean for clients that do not need to adhere to DOT regulations?

For all other clients that do not require to be in compliance with the US DOT, this panel change is not mandatory. The new panel is available through our lab for these Non US DOT clients starting the same date, January 2018.

However, it is important to note that at this time, a POCT (instant) test equivalent is not available. We have been advised that our supplier is in the process of creating an instant screening device that is equivalent to the new panel and they expect it to be ready sometime in the first or second quarter next year. A notice will sent once this option becomes available.

Many industries view the US DOT 5 panel as the gold standard for drug testing, and many company policies are currently using a testing panel that is identical to the existing DOT requirements. This existing panel will not be changed for clients that do not advise us of company drug and alcohol policy changes. It is recommended to always keep ECMM up to date on any company drug and alcohol policy changes, or provide us a copy of the policy, to ensure the appropriate testing is completed.

A notice regarding pricing will follow in the coming week.
