  • Drug and alcohol abuse is by no means a new problem. At various times throughout history there have been movements to address substance abuse and its effects. Over recent years, one important development has been the growing realization in many countries that drug and alcohol abuse is an important workplace issue.

The use of alcohol and other drugs becomes an occupational safety and health issue when a person’s ability to exercise judgment, coordination, motor control, concentration and alertness is affected in the workplace, leading to an increased risk of accident and injury.

Drug and alcohol abuse not only affects work performance but also results in higher rates of absenteeism, accidents, illness and mortality, with all their related costs.
